The Northeastern Loggers’ Association (NELA) recently honored individuals and companies in the regional forest products industry for their outstanding contributions to the industry over the past year. NELA officers presented the awards at the Annual Loggers’ Banquet in Essex Junction, Vermont, in a ceremony attended by more than 150 members of the Northeast’s forest products industry. NELMA member, Madison Lumber Mill of West Ossipee, New Hampshire received the Outstanding Sawmill Operator Award. NELA President, Fred Weld, made the presentation and quoted remarks from the nominating material submitted on behalf of Madison Lumber Mill.
“Madison is a real success story in that you have two individuals, Jim Smith and Kim Moore, who took a mill that was about to be mothballed or sold by International Paper – and they grabbed this thing by its bootstraps, and they kept it going. With over 50 employees,” Weld remarked. “Madison is surviving, if not succeeding during one of the worst economies in our lifetime. And they are accomplishing this by carefully listening to customers and nimbly changing production and sales plans to better meet changing conditions.”
Weld concluded “It’s clear that Jim Smith and Kim Moore, as well as the employees at Madison Lumber Mill present a great example to all of us in the forest products industry – if only because of the way they meet every challenge that comes their way – with hard work, flexibility and sacrifice. I’m proud to honor these people who do their jobs every day and do it well.” | |

Founded in 1933, the Northeastern Lumber Manufacturer's Association (NELMA) is one of seven lumber rules writing agencies in the U.S. accredited by the American Lumber Standard Committee (ALSC) to write grade rules that are certified as conforming to the American Softwood Lumber Standard PS20. NELMA is the official author and administrator of the grading rules for Eastern White Pine, in particular.
In addition to the quality control inspection audits we conduct at lumber manufacturers to ensure that on-grade Eastern White Pine products are meeting the needs of consumers, NELMA develops and distributes an array of technical information and unique promotional materials via our member-driven marketing program. We encourage you to browse through the pages of this website and discover why Eastern White Pine is the very best choice when wood is considered, both environmentally sustainable and application versatile.
